Use ChatGPT and Claude to appraise dental research with an auditable workflow.

Used raw, AI tools can invent citations and overstate scientific findings. Dental AI Skills is a free pack of seven structured protocols that require the workflow to report what was checked, label unchecked references, audit the statistics, and flag claims a paper may not support. You still verify important sources and make the clinical call.

By requesting the pack, you also subscribe to The Periospot Brew educational email series. Unsubscribe anytime.

Works with ChatGPT, Claude, and Codex. No GitHub account, no coding.

Why does ChatGPT invent citations?

A language model predicts plausible text. Without live retrieval it can produce a reference that looks real but does not resolve to a matching paper. The protocol requires the workflow to distinguish checked from unchecked references, report audit details, and label references unverified when live retrieval is unavailable. That makes the limits visible; it does not guarantee citation accuracy.

Invented citations

Raw chatbots can produce references that sound real and do not exist. The protocol requires the workflow to report retrieval status and label unchecked references unverified.

Missed deviations

A favorable mean with a large standard deviation is not predictability. The forensics protocol prompts an audit of SD, confidence intervals, ranges, and clinical thresholds.

Borrowed conclusions

Out of the box, AI can repeat the authors' spin. The critic builds a claim-to-evidence map and flags apparently unsupported claims for clinician review.

How can AI help appraise dental research?

The scientific skills hand off to each other: retrieve the literature, apply a design-appropriate appraisal tool, audit the numbers, assess the body of evidence, and build an auditable checklist and evidence map for clinician review.

  • Research Critic

Tears down a single paper with the proper risk of bias tools and a claim-to-evidence map.

  • Statistical Forensics

Audits every number: standard deviations, confidence intervals, MCID, and clinical relevance.

  • Evidence Retriever

Builds PubMed and Cochrane search strategies and instructs the workflow to report retrieval and verification status and label unchecked references unverified.

  • Evidence Reviewer

Grades the whole body of evidence with GRADE certainty, outcome by outcome.

    clinical-evidence-reviewer
  • Report Builder

Organizes completed critiques into polished HTML or PDF reports and instructs the workflow to ground its synthesis in the claims and evidence provided.

  • Content Creator

Audience-aware dental content with no-overclaim guardrails and evidence-backed mode.

  • Image Generator

AI clinical illustrations: surgical diagrams, patient handouts, branded visuals.

How do you check if a dental study is reliable?

Read past the average and check whether the spread supports the conclusion. A classic ridge preservation trial reports a favorable mean buccal height change. The Statistical Forensics protocol maps what the mean can hide:

Mean

+1.3 mm

Std deviation

±2.0 mm

Range

−2.0 to +4.5

The SD exceeds the mean gain and some preserved sites still lost height. On average the technique helps; for a single patient it is not guaranteed. That distinction is the whole point, and the full report is included in the pack as a worked example (Iasella et al. 2003).

How do you install the skills in ChatGPT, Claude, or Codex?

1

Leave your email

The pack arrives in your inbox in a minute or two.

2

Unzip and open START-HERE.pdf

Plain-language install steps for ChatGPT, Claude Desktop, claude.ai, Claude Code, and Codex. Five minutes, no coding.

3

Run a protocol

Drop a paper in and ask for the Research Critic or Statistical Forensics protocol. A practice study is included so you can try it immediately.

What do dentists ask about AI and research papers?

Does ChatGPT really make up citations for scientific papers?

It can. The Evidence Retriever protocol requires the workflow to state whether references were actually checked, report audit details, and flag unsupported claims. When live retrieval is unavailable, references must be labeled unverified. These safeguards improve transparency but do not guarantee that every citation is accurate, so verify important references yourself.

Can AI do critical appraisal of dental research?

AI can assist with structured appraisal using design-appropriate tools and produce an auditable checklist and claim-to-evidence map. It can surface questions about risk of bias and statistical interpretation, but the clinician remains responsible for checking the source material and making the clinical call.

Is it really free?

Yes. The skills are open source under the MIT license. The email version simply packages them with a plain-language install guide so you do not need GitHub.

Which AI tools does it work with?

ChatGPT (custom instructions), Claude Desktop and claude.ai (projects), Claude Code, and Codex. The skills are plain text protocols, so anything that accepts custom instructions works.

Do I need to know how to code?

No. Installing is copying a folder or pasting a text file. The START-HERE guide shows each platform step by step.
